The Full Zombie

A comprehensive exploration of the cultural history, science, and ethics of the Haitian zombie

Church or Voodoo?
Scientology under Attack.

Once upon a time during the Hellenistic era, a multi-talented genius, Daedalus by his Latin name, inventor of the Arts and of many notable crafts, successfully transferred the human soul to external mechanical devices or machines, realizing what had been man's pipe dream for thousands of years: the idea that human beings could infuse a soul into inanimate objects, thereby giving them life.

Flash-forward to the Talmudic era when mystic Jews set out to create a man in God's image! History has it that they made a golem, or man of clay, which they animated, using Hebrew texts found in the Sefer Yetzirah, or Book of Creation. They were however unable to imbue him with a soul, the soul being an attribute that only God can confer, according to Christian Scriptures. It is then clear that Daedalus's science and soul-transfer technology was not passed on to succeeding generations of "soul-searchers" over the centuries.

Deprived of a soul, the golem has no self-consciousness, no will or ability to cogitate. He can only perform menial jobs or simple tasks assigned to him by his Master. The golem, therefore, is nothing more than a zombie and, as such, he is destined to be a slave.

Despite these similarities, there is a fundamental difference between a golem (Jewish zombie) and the prototype Haitian zombie. As a man-made creature, the golem has absolutely no connections to God. He has no inner spiritual life, that is to say, he is a-spiritual and, presumably, amoral as well. He has no way of apprehending goodness since goodness is a reflection of God. By contrast, even after losing his "ti bon ange" to evil forces, the Haitian zombie retains his "gro bon ange," the portion of the soul that animates him and provides him with some measure of spirituality and morality. Obviously, half a soul is better than none at all.

The degree to which the Haitian zombie can express his spirituality has however not been determined. In any case, "The Full Zombie" has always argued that no aspect of the supernatural or spiritual world can be the submitted to critical scientific evaluation, and that any data generated by such investigation are doomed to be viewed with suspicion, if not as the product of pseudo-science or Voodoo.

Hence, it did not come as a surprise when a French Court in Paris found the Church of Scientology guilty of "Organized Fraud" for the marketing and selling of a high tech gizmo supposedly designed to measure the degree of spiritual well-being of its members (1), so that those displaying low levels of spirituality or psychological duress could be referred to specialists for remedial therapy. With this verdict, the French Court has essentially determined that Scientology is engaged in Voodoo activities. The idea that one can measure the spirituality of a person digitally, says the court, is a hoax. It's Voodoo! plain and simple. As one can see, there is more to Voodoo than meets the eye.
